Purple Stride raises funds for and awareness of pancreatic cancer

Our longtime reporter Joe Flanagan was emcee of the Fifth Annual Stride for Survival, which surpassed it's $150.000 goal by 20%, raising nearly $180,000.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WVEC) - The Oceanfront was painted purple this morning Sunday morning, and for a really great cause.

It was the Fifth Annual 'Stride for Survival, an event to raise awareness about, and funds to fight pancreatic cancer.

Pancreatic cancer is statistically one of the worst forms you can get. Only nine percent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, will survive more than five years.

Our longtime reporter Joe Flanagan was emcee of the 5-K run and walk.

More than 79 teams signed up to participate.

According to event organizers, Norfolk’s Allena Anglen raised more than $20,000 for Team Hurwitz in memory of her father, Ron Hurwitz, who died on Jan. 1. No team in the event’s five-year history has raised more.

“My father died at the young age of 64 after a three-month battle with pancreatic cancer,” Anglen said. “My grandmother died of the same disease. Too many people we know have lost this battle.”

How about this: Purple Stride's event surpassed it's $150.000 goal by 20%, raising nearly $180,000.
