Schools, others in Hampton Roads, N.C. close, cancel activities after damage left by Michael

Due to power outages and other storms caused by Tropical Storm Michael, many schools and organizations are closed or operating on a delay Friday, Oct. 12.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — Tropical Storm Michael, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, hit the Hampton Roads area overnight leaving many people without power and at least 1,200 roads closed according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

While closing and delay announcements started Thursday afternoon, many schools and organizations have decided to remain closed Friday because of the damage Michael left.

The following organizations have made announcements:

  • Albemarle School: Opening one-hour late on Friday.
  • Bertie County Schools: Schools will operate on a 2-hour delay Friday.
  • Busch Gardens: Plans to reopen Friday, Oct. 12 at 12 p.m. Anyone who had a ticket for Thursday, Oct. 11 can use it Friday, Oct, 12, Thursday, Oct 18, or Thursday, Oct. 25.
  • Chesapeake Public Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12, administrators and 12-month staff report two-hours late.
  • City of Chesapeake: All offices and facilities will open at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Creekside Elementary: closed Friday, Oct. 12, staff does not need to report; Creekside Elementary School's Before School Care will operate on a two-hour delay.
  • Dare County Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Edenton-Chowan Schools: Operating on a two-hour delay.
  • Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools: Schools will operate in a two-hour delay Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Gates County Schools: Operating on a two-hour delay Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Hampton City Offices: Operating on a two-hour delay, all offices and facilities will open at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Hampton City Schools: Schools and offices are closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Isle of Wight County Schools: Schools operating on a two-hour delay Friday, Oct. 12; The School Board meeting originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11 has been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 16 at 6 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors Room at the IOW Courthouse Complex.
  • Newport News Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12 - ten and 11-month staff do not report, 12-month staff report two-hours late, all plant services staff report on time.
  • Norfolk Public Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • North Suffolk Library: Remaining closed until power has been restored.
  • Portsmouth City Offices: All city offices will open on a two-hour delay Friday, Oct. 12, operating hours begin at 10 a.m.
  • Portsmouth Public Schools: Schools and administrative offices are closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Sandbridge Chapel Day School: Opening on a two-hour delay Friday, Oct. 12.
  • Southampton County Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12
  • Suffolk Public Schools: All schools operating on a two-hour delay.
  • Virginia Beach City Offices: Operating on a four-hour delay, opening at noon, Friday, Oct. 12; Employees in essential operations should check with supervisors to determine whether there is any change in reporting requirements.
  • Virginia Beach City Public Schools: Closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • William & Mary University: Women's soccer match against Elon University scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Thursday is rescheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday at Martin Family Stadium on Albert-Daly Field.
  • Williamsburg-James City County: Schools and offices are closed Friday, Oct. 12.
  • York County School Division: Closed Friday, Oct. 12.
