City staff plan to recommend a bid to add a marina in Waterside

City leaders want to make the Waterside District a little different with a world-class marina.

NORFOLK, Va. (WVEC) — City leaders are looking to add a vibrant world-class marina to Waterside.

The goal is to make the area a year-long destination. According to documents, the renovated marina would have over 32-slips to rent for people traveling by boat from other cities.

“With all the local business, you could dock over here at Waterside and you could go onto maybe Chrysler Hall or the Hockey game and see the exciting things and maybe you come back and then get a dinner here at Waterside,” explained Director of Waterside District Fred Rose.

On Tuesday night, city leaders plan to receive recommendations from city staff and approve a bid. After that, leaders will begin negotiations.

So far, no contract has been awarded to a company.

“Folks here that are local get to have a staycation," said Rose. "They get to come in whether they live over in Norfolk or Virginia Beach and take a quick day trip here to downtown Norfolk."

According to the city documents, for vessels up to 50 feet, the cost to dock a boat would be $5 for up to three hours.

“We don’t know what it’s going to look like but we are excited about the potential of what a new marina has for the downtown Norfolk community,” said Rose.
