Eric Brown competency hearing canceled

District Judge Raymond Jackson ordered Eric Brown committed to a medical facility in Butner, North Carolina, for an additional 120 days.

NORFOLK, Va. — The competency hearing scheduled for the man charged in the kidnapping and death of Ashanti Billie is canceled.

Eric Brown's competency hearing was scheduled for March 27, according to court documents.

District Judge Raymond Jackson ordered Brown committed to a medical facility in Butner, North Carolina, for an additional 120 days.

The court ordered commitment expires July 18. Seven days before the court order expiration, the medical facility's director will give an update on Brown's status.

The retired Navy veteran was arrested in connection with the disappearance and murder of Ashanti Billie. He is charged with kidnapping and murder.

A surveillance camera at Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek recorded the 19-year-old Billie's Mini Cooper leaving the base early on the morning of September 18. Nearly two weeks later, her body was found near a church in Charlotte, North Carolina.
