5K run in Virginia Beach aims to spread awareness about colon cancer

Sentara Healthcare said early detection is the key in battling colon cancer.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Don’t sit on colon cancer. That was Sentara Healthcare’s message in Virginia Beach on Saturday during its 5K run.

Participants ran the 5K to raise awareness about colon cancer —the second leading diagnosis in Hampton Roads.

Runner Maurice Jones said the disease hits close to home.

“We’ve had a long family history of colon cancer. So it was a good cause for us to come out here and support our family member who is currently battling right now and is doing an excellent job surviving.”

The family member, Danielle Jones, has colon cancer and lost her mother to the same disease.

“I think it’s very important that everyone has awareness for this,” she said. “The hope is this race will encourage people to get screened. Colon cancer is curable if it’s found early.”

That’s why Cindy Allen with Sentara Healthcare said early detection is key.

“Cancer not only affects the patient, it affects the entire family.”
