Newport News officer surprised by boy's kindness on Easter

An elementary school-aged boy in Newport News decided to surprise a police officer with some Easter Dinner.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News police officer and his partner were surprised by a boy's kindness on Easter Sunday.

The police department said while Officer E. Beganovic and his partner were on patrol, an elementary school-aged boy named Jeremiah brought them Easter dinner!

The dinner included some mac and cheese, chicken, ham, lima beans, and rice.

“He touched my heart," said Beganovic. "A lot of people need to start taking notes from this little boy.”

Now Jeremiah's random act of kindness is leaving a lasting impression in the community.

Beganovic shared a picture along with a summary of the interaction on Facebook.  The post now has more than 4,000 views and hundreds of likes from people across the country.

Officer Beganovic believes Jeremiah’s actions show how their department’s community-focused policing is making a positive impression on the people.

“Even with this little boy. Who didn’t want anything in return? He just wanted to bring some Easter dinner," he said.

Here is what Officer Beganovic had to say about meeting Jeremiah:

“My heart is full!! Meet Jeremiah who saw myself and my partner patrolling his neighborhood and came up to us and stated: “I noticed you guys are on patrol and wanted to bring you some Easter dinner”!! This is an elementary school student and I am so touched by him!! You made my day Jeremiah!! You are going to grow up and become an amazing man!!”

Way to go, Jeremiah!

It turns out, officers were in the neighborhood just two weeks ago after a deadly shooting.

“You know he could’ve been in the wrong place at the wrong time,” the officer said.

So, Officer Beganovic never expected this, “just to see a, you know, a young man with a huge heart like that coming up to me in that same community means the world.”

He hopes to see Jeremiah again soon, to thank Jeremiah for the meal again.

“It was delicious by the way, he even brought a silver fork. So, I owe his mom a silver fork back,” he said.

For now, Beganovic said he leaves his elementary school buddy with this message, “Jeremiah, with your gesture, with what you did. I think we’re just going to keep going in that direction and positively affect our community.”
