Portsmouth sees surge in homicides in 2019

The City recorded its 13th homicide of 2019 on Sunday. By comparison, there were five homicides during at this point in 2018.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Homicides in Portsmouth are on a notable 160-percent increase over this time last year.

The City recorded its 13th homicide of 2019 after a man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon near an elementary school. By comparison, there were five homicides during the same period of time in 2018.

This year’s latest homicide came Sunday when a man was shot in the torso near Brighton Elementary School at the intersection of Peach Street and Portsmouth Boulevard. The victim, whose name has not yet been released, died at the scene.

There have been no arrests made yet in Sunday’s deadly shooting but Portsmouth Police have already cleared most of this year’s cases.

The department, which is currently lead by Interim Police Chief Angela Greene, will hold a RESET walk Monday afternoon in response to the weekend shooting.

Here’s a list of the homicides recorded in the City of Portsmouth in 2019:

  1. Kenneth Ard, 53, was shot and killed in the 500 block of Rapidan Street on January 7. No arrests.
  2. Delvin Crosby, 29, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of January 19 in the 3700 block of Turnpike Road. Aake Russan, 20, was charged with first-degree murder.
  3. Donnell Joyner, 49, was stabbed to death in the 500 block of Madison Street on February 2. Al Jerry Hargrave, 46, was charged with second-degree murder.
  4. Reggie G. Dixon, 40, died in the 1100 block of Queen Street after being shot multiple times on February 10. Terrance Washington, 38, was charged with first-degree murder.
  5. Jermaine Iriarte, 34, was shot and killed at the Cock Island Bar and Grille at 606 Airline Boulevard in the early morning hours of March 5. Nicholas Kyle Moffitt, 20, was charged with first-degree murder.
  6. Tyquan Charles, 18, was shot and killed March 10 on Buchanan Avenue. An unnamed juvenile was charged with first-degree murder in this case.

7 and 8. Wilbur Giles, 66, and Chiquita Giles, 34, were shot and killed in a double murder on March 16 in the 3600 block of Gateway Drive. Sheldon Marcus Porter, 36, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

9. Toni Isenburg, 30, was shot and killed inside a home on Fairview Circle South during the early morning hours of April 26. No arrests.

10 and 11: Shianne Soles, 19, and Meaghan Burns, 23, were both shot and killed outside the 7-Eleven on Effingham Street on May 4. The suspected gunman, 22-year-old Donavon Moora, was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in a nearby car.

12. Donald Thorington, 23, was shot to death May 5 after an apparent argument in the 1300 block of Atlanta Avenue. Dalen Spence, 21, was charged with first-degree murder.

13. Vien Nguyen, 25, was found shot to death May 19 at the intersection of Peach Street and Portsmouth Boulevard. No arrests.
