'Urine sample' that led to evacuation at Hampton VA Medical Center was vinegar

People evacuated a building at the Hampton VA Medical Center on May 15 because of a urine sample's "pungent odor." Testing showed the sample was vinegar.

HAMPTON, Va. — A spokesman for the Hampton VA Medical Center (HVAMC) said Monday that vinegar a veteran dropped off as a urine sample was responsible for the evacuation of a building that took place on May 15.

Staff members in Building 144, the medical center's mental health building said a "pungent odor" seemed to overtake the first and second floors that afternoon. Everyone cleared the building and emergency workers from the City of Hampton were there.

Two employees needed medical attention because of what happened.

A lab in Richmond tested the urine sample the veteran took to the medical center. It found that the urine was, in fact, vinegar.

John Rogers with HVAMC said that because of patient privacy restrictions, the center couldn't offer any other comment.
