VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach Police Officer Albert DeAngelis is facing a domestic assault charge after his ex-wife Michelle Elling said he choked her twice last week.

According to the criminal complaint released Monday, Elling reported that DeAngelis choked her twice and threw her on the floor and bathtub of her home. The complaint states that Elling "fears for her life and future acts of violence." It also refers to a reported history of abuse between DeAngelis and Elling, saying "there [have] been prior incidents involving violence."

In 2006, police arrested Elling, her mother Rosemary Elling and brother Hanns Herzog. The three faced charges related to a plan to murder DeAngelis.

Elling and her mother pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder, receiving 18-month and 31-month sentences. Herzog served eight years in prison for attempted murder.

During his sentencing, Herzog told the court he was protecting his pregnant sister and her children from an abusive situation.

DeAngelis is on administrative assignment with the Virginia Beach Police Department pending the outcome of multiple investigations. He's worked for VBPD for 17 years.

DeAngelis was released on bond and is scheduled for an arraignment in early July.
