Officials: North Landing Bridge opened after days of closure

The bridge was stuck in the open position.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — North Landing Bridge on Mount Pleasant Road opened on Thursaday at 9 a.m. after it was closed to traffic for several days.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District said the bridge experienced multiple mechanical issues and is stuck in the open position.

The City said in a news release that the bridge will remain closed until approximately Thursday, July 18.

Joel Scussel, Norfolk District’s Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway project manager, said a mechanical part failed early Monday, damaging two other parts and cutting an electrical cable.

“We have two of the parts available,” he added, “but the third part will need to be removed from under the bridge span, repaired and reinstalled. The electrical cable has been repaired so the bridge spans can swing; however, we cannot secure the spans in place for vehicle traffic.”

Chesapeake police were redirecting traffic at Fentress Airfield Rd.

Motorists traveling north on Mount Pleasant Road in Chesapeake detoured around the bridge by taking Centerville Turnpike to Elbow Road to Indian River Road, then back to North Landing Road. The detour should be followed in reverse for drivers traveling south on North Landing Road in Virginia Beach.

Vessels along the canal can contact the North Landing Bridge operator on Marine Channel 13 for additional details.
