Newport News head-on crash sends 5 people to hospital; 1 person in critical condition

A vehicle eluding police drove the wrong way onto westbound I-64 and hit another vehicle. One person is in critical condition.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News police are investigating a wrong-way crash that left five people injured early Sunday morning.

One person is in critical condition in the hospital, PIO Kelly King said.

It all began around 3:36 a.m. when police attempted to stop a vehicle for a possible DUI.

The vehicle failed to yield and entered westbound Interstate 64 in the eastbound lane and hit another vehicle, police said.

The suspect and two passengers in the vehicle police attempted to stop were injured and taken to the hospital.

The other vehicle's driver and a passenger were also taken to the hospital.

Newport News police's Crash Team and Virginia State Police were on scene investigating the crash.

King said the "driver of the suspect vehicle has been charged and is in custody."

Police charged 34-year-old Michael Alexander Palmer of Hampton with the following:

  • DRUGS: POSSESS SCH I OR II
  • PARAPHERNALIA: UNAUTHORIZED DISTRIBUTION OF|
  • PROBATION: VIOLATION ON FELONY OFFENSE
  • LAW ENF COMMAND: DISREGARD OR ELUDE
  • DEFECTIVE/UNSAFE EQUIP
  • FAIL TO KEEP RIGHT
  • SEAT BELT REQ. FRONT SEAT
  • RECK DR: GENERALLY, ENDANGER LIFE/LIMB/PROPERTY
  • LIC REVOKED: DR W/O LICENSE, 3RD OR MORE OFF

Additional changes for Palmer are pending.
