Firefighters battle large house fire in Hampton

The fire was called in around 11 a.m. in the 2900 block of Chesapeake Avenue, which is located near the waterfront. All occupants were able to get out.

HAMPTON, Va. — Firefighters are battling a blaze that has engulfed a Hampton house on Tuesday morning.

The fire was called in around 11 a.m. in the 2900 block of Chesapeake Avenue, which is located near the waterfront. All occupants were able to get out safely.

The fire was brought under control before 1 p.m., with crews staying on-scene to put out any hot spots.

"We noticed heavy fire in the attic," said Battalion Chief Anthony Chittum. "It's an older home that doesn't have fire stops. That's why [firefighters] are having a difficult time."

Chesapeake Avenue is currently closed from Powhatan Parkway to LaSaslle Avenue.

There is no immediate word on what caused the fire.
