Newport News police: Man dies, woman shot in domestic incident

Police said the man was dead at the scene and the woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News is investigating a fatal domestic incident that involved two people being shot on Thursday.

Around noon, Emergency Communications received a 911 call about the incident in the 200 block of Cabell Drive. On the scene, officers heard multiple gunshots from inside a home, so they broke through the door to get inside.

Once officers were inside the home, they found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators did find a gun inside the home.

Police Chief Steven Drew told 13News Now that a child was inside the home at the time of the incident. She called 911 after running outside.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved in today’s incident. Our officers acted quickly and efficiently at the scene, and I am extremely proud and impressed with their response. I am reminded of the risk they may face daily,” Chief Steve Drew said. “Domestic violence continues to be a major issue facing this city, and I remain committed to finding solutions. If you know of someone in a potentially dangerous relationship, I encourage you to reach out to the Police Department.”

Newport News Police Department is still investigating. Officials said they are not looking for any other suspects in this case.

Brandon Maynard with the Newport News Police Department said both Menchville High and BC Charles Elementary School were placed on lockdown during the early stages of this incident.
