Norfolk votes to relocate Confederate statue to Elmwood Cemetery

Last month the towering 80-foot "Johnny Reb" obelisk and statue were carefully dismantled and are currently in storage.

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk City Council took the next steps to relocate its Confederate monument on Tuesday.

Last month, city crews took down the "Johnny Reb" statue located in Downtown, and then dismantled the pillar it sat on.

Right now the statue is in storage.

The city held a public meeting to discuss where the statue should be permanently moved to.

Several people spoke at the meeting, including two women who suggested the statue be taken into possession by the Shenandoah battlefields instead of going into a cemetery.

City council noted that a 30-day window is now open for outside groups to present formal requests to take possession of the monument. So far, there have been no requests from Shenandoah or any other group.

The meeting ended with a unanimous 7-0 vote (Councilman Paul Riddick was not present) to relocate the statue to Elmwood Cemetery if no other bids are presented.
