Summons issued after two separate crashes involving 11 cars inside Monitor-Merrimac

One person was hurt after two separate crashes in the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel. Police say that person's injury isn't serious.

SUFFOLK, Va. — State police released the latest on an investigation into two separate crashes consisting of 11 cars that happened inside the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel Tuesday afternoon.

State Police Spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya said both collisions happened in the northbound lanes of the MMMBT around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

When dispatchers first got the call, they heard it was an 11-vehicle pileup. Authorities later learned it was two separate crashes -- one with five cars and the other with six cars.

Only one person suffered a minor injury. No one else was hurt. All of the cars involved did sustain some rear and bumper damage.

A total of nine summons were issued for following too closely. The tunnel was shut down for about an hour as crews worked to clear both crash scenes.

No other details have been released at this time.
