Virginia Beach SPCA asks for help as it takes in dozens of rescue animals

According to a post on their Facebook page, the dogs are a portion of more than 100 that were surrendered.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach SPCA has taken in 33 dogs after they were rescued from a reported hoarding situation on the Eastern Shore, and now they're reaching out to the public for help in covering the costs of caring for them.

According to a post on their Facebook page, the dogs are among more than 100 that were surrendered.

Virginia Beach SPCA communications and marketing manager, Mandi Kowaleski said they took in 45 dogs initially before another rescue group took on some of theirs. Now 33 pups will remain at the SPCA until they are adopted. The rest are at other shelters in the region.

The dogs were described as "scared, dirty, and covered in fleas" on the organization's Facebook page. They said the dogs had never been outside the house from which they were rescued.

“These dogs are rather frightened,” Kowaleski said. “Some of them do have a lot of fleas, matted, that kind of thing.”

Kowaleski said the dogs have a long way to go. They’re still being examined and monitored by vets.

“They are not available for adoption right now, they have a lot of care that needs to go into them before that happens," she said. “Right now, financial donations go a long way.”

In addition to monetary donations, the SPCA is also accepting new or gently used sheets and towels. For now, workers are helping the dogs decompress and nursing them to full health.

“We’re working on getting them the medical care that they need as well as the emotional needs that they have right now," Kowaleski said.

URGENT NEED: These 45 dogs just arrived at Virginia Beach SPCA after being surrendered from a hoarding situation on the Eastern Shore. In total, there were more than 100 dogs living inside the home. They are scared, dirty, and covered in fleas. These dogs have never been outside of that house before now. We need your help. The majority of these dogs will remain in the care of the VBSPCA, while the rest will go to other rescue organizations in the region. They are currently getting settled at our shelter where they can be bathed and seen by our veterinarians. Please donate to their care and share this post. Every dollar makes a difference.
