Suffolk police: 4-year-old child dies after being shot, man charged with second-degree murder

Antonio Lonnell Melton is facing second-degree murder, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, reckless handling of a gun and other charges.

SUFFOLK, Va. — The Suffolk Police Department is investigating after a child died from a gunshot wound on Sunday night. 

According to police, officers got a call about the shooting right after 9 p.m. 

It happened in a home on the 200 block of Pine Street. That's off of W. Washington Street. 

When emergency responders got there, they found a 4-year-old boy who had been shot.

He was treated and taken to the hospital, where he died. Police didn't share the name of the boy.

Police say that the suspect involved in this shooting has been taken into custody. 

Monday morning, they said 38-year-old Antonio Lonnell Melton would be facing these charges:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • Use of a Firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Possession of firearm by a violent felon
  • Reckless handling of a firearm (felony)

He was taken to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
