Hampton and Newport News drenched by Thursday's heavy rain

Officials in Newport News and Hampton say they saw moderate rain through the morning and while they didn't see any weather impacts, that could change later on.

HAMPTON, Va. — It felt like a busy morning for some Peninsula commuters.

“A lot of traffic," said Williamsburg resident Rayahna Honaker. "I did see a semi run into trees off the freeway.”

She said she thought she got out of the door early. “Because I tried to plan my day accordingly and I was still late,” she said.

Throughout the morning, heavy rain fell across the region. As of 10 a.m., 13News Now meteorologists reported that roughly 1.5 inches of rain had fallen in Hampton, and more than 2 inches in Newport News.

In Hampton, preparations for Thursday’s rain started earlier this week.

“Public Works is out there looking at ditches but we have not had any problems yet,” said Hampton City spokesperson Robin McCormick. She said city officials are concerned about flooding on Thursday night, although she added that any impact is expected to be minor.

“We will be watching the tide charts and watching the areas that are low-lying,” she said. “Downtown, nearby right along the Hampton River and of course Fox Hill, Grandview.”

Over in Newport News, Brian McCoy with stormwater operations said they’ve seen moderate rainfall throughout the morning.

“Wasn’t any flooding, any catch basins clogged up or any type of roadway hazards,” he said.

McCoy said crews are working 12-hour shifts to respond to any weather predicament.

“We have on-call personnel coming in after hours to receive any service calls we receive in between that time.”

Honaker said once she clocks out at work, she’s headed straight home.

“I will definitely be at home," she said. "I will make sure I get all my grocery shopping, anything that I need out of the way so that I will not be out in this rain.”
