17 people displaced by Chesapeake apartment fire

Six adults and 11 children are displaced following a fire in the MacDonald Manor apartments in Chesapeake.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake Fire Department confirmed they received a call around 6pm Sunday reporting a fire in an apartment in the 1300 block of MacDonald Road.

Within five minutes Engine Company 3 arrived at the MacDonald Manor Apartments and reported fire and smoke coming from a second floor unit. The fire was extinguished in less than 20 minutes.

Virginia Beach Engine 10 and Ladder 10 also assisted by providing automatic-aid units, and arrived on scene moments later.

One apartment was damaged by fire, with six others damaged by smoke, water, or a combination of both. A total of seven apartments and 17 people have been affected, six children and 11 adults. The displaced residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.

The fire was caused by an electrical failure in the kitchen of the second floor apartment and has been ruled accidental by fire investigators.
