Two people hurt, dog killed in Suffolk house fire

Firefighters arrived just as two elderly residents were rushing to get out of the burning single-story home on Eagle Lane.

SUFFOLK, Va. — Two people are in the hospital following a house fire in Suffolk on Friday morning.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue said the fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. in the 100 block of Eagle Lane, not far from Oakland Elementary School. Firefighters arrived just as two elderly residents were rushing to get out of the burning single-story home.

Firefighters initially said the pair were taken to the hospital with "minor to moderate injuries", but have updated to say one of the residents is listed in serious condition.

A dog also died in the fire.  No firefighters were hurt.

Crews brought the fire under control within a half hour. The Fire Marshal's Office is investigating what caused the fire.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue said the American Red Cross is assisting the residents, who will be displaced as a result of the fire.
