Juvenile injured in Portsmouth shooting

Portsmouth Police responded to a call reporting a shooting on the 30 Block of Farragut Street.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A juvenile has been injured in a shooting, Portsmouth Police said.

Officers responded to a call reporting a shooting on the 30 Block of Farragut Street.

Neighbor Jennifer Dunleavy said she was sitting on her couch in her living room when she heard gunfire outside of her home.

“You hear, three, four shots, and a group of ten-twelve kids run down Farragut towards Afkin Parkway,” said Dunleavy, who said she has lived in the Cradock neighborhood for a year.

She said she heard about 20 gunshots.

“I didn’t see who did it or anything, but I saw them calmly walking in the direction of the shooting, and then right when the shooting and then they ran the other way,” said Dunleavy.

Portsmouth Police responded to the area at 6:13 p.m. Friday evening. There, they found a child who had been shot and taken to the hospital. Detectives blocked a portion of Farragut Street for hours to investigate.

One neighbor said he had just finished doing yard work when he heard the gunfire.

“Immediately following, Portsmouth Police responded, and I heard from neighbors there were some kids [who] were getting into something, and you know what happened, happened,” said the neighbor.

He also said that he witnessed someone run away from the scene. The neighbor said the incident left him feeling a little nervous.

“I’m a little bit shaken up. Normally, I don’t get shaken up, but everybody is really on edge about it. Stuff like that normally doesn’t happen in this area. It’s very surprising,” said the neighbor.

Police have not released the status of the juvenile victim.

No suspects have been named.

More details will be provided when they become available.
