Why are gas prices in Hampton Roads different from station to station?

The spokesperson for the National Association of Convenience Stores, Jeff Lenard, said there are many reasons for higher gas prices and that location matters.

NORFOLK, Va. — Americans spend an average of $3.66 for one gallon of regular gas, according to AAA, which is nearly 0.15 higher than in April.

Many drivers have noticed a price difference from one gas station to the next.

On Indian River Road in Virginia Beach, Exxon sells a gallon of regular gas for $3.49, while just across the street, it costs $3.89. There is a 0.40 difference between the two gas stations.

"It's a crazy price," said driver Muhammad Airohine.

He said that he is tired of paying more at the pump. He said he noticed that the price of gas changes slightly each month.

"Every month [it's] more than 25, 35 cents more," said Airohine.

The spokesperson for the National Association of Convenience Stores, Jeff Lenard, said there are many reasons for higher gas prices and that location matters.

"Stations that are right across the street from each other probably don't consider their competition. Competition is usually based on [if] you take a right-hand turn. Consumers hate taking left-hand turns," said Lenard.

According to the association, other factors include taxes, fuel blends and margins.

"Either their [gas stations] wholesale costs are different meaning that they pay for that fuel depending upon time of day, if prices are increasing, how many gallons they sell whether they're branded or unbranded. All those factors contribute to wholesale prices. The other reason might just because of business decisions," said Lenard.

"It's a necessity and just try to get perks out of it, I guess, and it's local," said driver Alex Jimeno.
