April Weather Recap: A rollercoaster of temperatures with little rainfall

April featured our first 90-degree day, but rain was hard to come by.

NORFOLK, Va. — Now that we're a few days into May, let's recap the weather from April.

April's temperatures resembled a rollercoaster: high temperatures were up and down all month!

We started off the month strong with highs above average. Then, we dipped into the upper 50s and lower 60s immediately following those warm days. We rebounded back to above-average temperatures during the middle of the month.

In the midst of that mid-month warmth, we hit our first 90-degree day of 2024 on the 15th. Compared to 2023, we were months ahead of last year's first 90-degree reading. We hit 90° in 2023 for the first time on July 1st.

On average, in Norfolk, we have our first 90-degree day of the year on May 18th. So even compared to average, the heat this year came early.

For the last full week of April, we went back to the bottom of the rollercoaster with temperatures running below average. April didn't give up though. Temperatures sprung right back to the upper 80s to end the month.

Even with all of the up and down temperatures, April 2024 was about one degree above normal.

Now, to rainfall.

April was fairly dry. Out of all 30 days, only seven days recorded measurable rainfall. That rainfall only added up to a little more than an inch of rain.

During a typical April, we should accumulate over three inches of rain, so we ended the month two inches short. The interesting thing is that during March of 2024, we gained over 10 inches of rain so April's rainfall total was an impressive contrast, to say the least.

Now that we're in May, we have multiple opportunities for rain. Stay tuned on-air and online for the latest forecast from Hampton Roads' Most Accurate weather team.
